He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably. His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.
They honored us in many ways and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed. When Publius, the chief official of the island, had heard the story, he took Paul and some of his companions into his home. After Paul had healed him, revival was ignited on the island.
Before Paul left Malta, every sick person on the island had come to the meetings and had been healed. What an amazing God we serve. Even when we feel that our lives are being totally blown off course by the storms raging around us, God is in full control. For some of you, the storms of your life will simply subside.
Others of you will find yourselves shipwrecked in a place you never thought you would be. If the latter scenario best describes your life, be encouraged. Like Paul, you will be embarking on another divine phase of your destiny. Only you, however, can determine the outcome of this new phase. If you sulk or pout about the things you lost, the best you can expect is to be rescued from the wreckage of your storm. Have you been shipwrecked on the shores of a new city, a new job, a new school, or a new church? Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta.
The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.
The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god. Just as Paul had predicted, the ship ran aground on a sandbar.
Now, as they were floating and swimming toward the distant island, they were simply thankful to be alive. Everyone on the ship knew that a prisoner had saved their lives. When the haggard survivors finally came ashore on the island of Malta, only Paul realized that their shipwreck was more than a tragic accident. Despite the fact that Paul was cold and exhausted, Paul sensed that God had a work to do in this strange place. Paul had been so lost in his thoughts that he never even saw the serpent that lunged out of the wood he was carrying and sank its fangs into his hand.
While the crew wondered how this could happen to such a righteous man, the inhabitants of the island speculated that Paul must be a horrible criminal because this snake never failed to kill its victims. Paul, however, simply raised his arm and violently shook it back and forth until the snake was thrown into the fire.
With no evidence of swelling in his body or any other sign that he had even been bitten, Paul calmly continued to collect the wood that was needed for the fire. What has bitten your life today? Some of you may have been bitten by financial disaster or unemployment. Others of you have been deeply bitten by rejection or the betrayal of someone you love.
Even now, the venom of those cutting words is coursing through your veins. I can barely move. No matter what type of diabolical serpent it may be, it is no match for the authority given us by Jesus. After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. Paul tried to warn them. He told them that their voyage would bring the loss of their ship and their cargo.
Although the voyage had started out smoothly enough, Paul, his fellow prisoners, and the whole crew were in terrible danger. The winds and the waves battered the ship so violently that the crew was forced to throw the cargo overboard. If anything, Paul should have been filled with resentment that they had rejected his warning; a normal man would have been.
But he was no normal man. He was the Apostle Paul, and an angel appeared to him in the midst of the storm. The angel told Paul not to be afraid because he would reach Rome. God also told Paul that He would spare the lives of everyone who was sailing with him. Although the ship would be destroyed on a sandbar, not one person aboard the ship would lose his life.
Could it be that, like Paul, you have been placed in the midst of a horrible crisis for the purpose of saving those around you? If so, this is no time for you to give in to despair. The same God who promised Paul his life and the lives of those around him is also able to deliver you and those you love today. If this is where you find yourself, there are three things you must do. First, even though Paul had been brought on the trip as a prisoner and had warned them that horrible storms were coming, he refused to become resentful and bitter. This is a critical point, for if you grow resentful or bitter in the face of your storm, your bitterness will eat away the very confidence you need to survive.
Some of you may even feel that you married into your storm.
Deep inside, you are filled with resentment because you are suffering due to a decision your spouse made. Others of you may be angry because your career or job has been adversely affected by the decisions of your superiors. Second, the angel commanded Paul not to be afraid. Even though the storm literally tore the ship to pieces and the winds drove them toward a treacherous sandbar, Paul did not allow fear to rule in his heart.
